Cloves – not just a popular ingredient in Christmas biscuits
Clove oil is traditionally extracted from the clove tree. Like the cajuput tree, it is a member of the myrtle family. The clove tree originates in the Moluccas (“Spice Islands” in Indonesia) and is now cultivated in many other regions around the world.
The active substance has been proven to have a number of properties, including the suppression of pain. Studies have proven the analgesic activity of the main ingredient in clove oil, eugenol. Eugenol can also modulate sensitivity to heat by activating certain receptors.
